BACnet Heat Pump Thermostats Now Available

Contemporary Controls now offers BACnet-compliant wired or wireless communicating thermostats suitable for heating, cooling, and ventilation with binary output control for single and multi-stage heat pumps with or without 3rd stage auxiliary heat.

"The new thermostats can manage a variety of inputs from single and multi-stage HVAC systems," said Joe Stasiek, Sales Manager at Contemporary Controls. "They can control two DX heat pump compressors, one binary reversing valve, one binary supply fan relay, plus one binary stage of auxiliary heating, either gas or electric, making them ideal for applications that require versatility and adaptability."

The new models join Contemporary Controls' popular BASstat Communicating Thermostat series. They are BACnet compliant to ensure seamless integration into a BACnet/IP (Wi-Fi) or BACnet MS/TP (EIA-485) networks. The BAST-321HP-B2 wired thermostat (BTL Listed) is BACnet MS/TP connected utilizing an EIA-485 serial connection. The BAST-321HP-BW2 wireless thermostat is BACnet/IP connected using a wireless connection to a nearby Wi-Fi router/access point which supports IEEE 802.11b/g/n.

An adjustable algorithm applied to multi-stage on/off control (2 cooling stages and 3 heating stages) saves energy and ensures comfort for the occupants. Three sensing options are available—built-in temperature sensor, input for remote temperature sensor, or temperature network command from a Building Automation System. Reversing valve (O/B) logic is configurable. Occupancy status can be set from thermostat buttons, a wired ESI input, or over the BACnet network.

Both models provide multi-staged heating and cooling control in an attractive wall-mounted enclosure. A large LCD display indicates setpoint, space temperature, and current mode of operation using graphical icons. The icons are easy to read and provide a visual indication of parameters such as: Active Mode, Cooling stage 1 or 2, Heating stage 1, 2, or 3, Ventilation Only, Fan Active, and Occupied/Unoccupied state. A Clock icon indicates Short Cycle Delay or Maximum Cycles per Hour active waiting state.

Six buttons on the BASstat allow users to adjust temperature set points, change HVAC modes, turn the thermostat ON/OFF, and more. These buttons can also be locked individually, making the BASstat suitable for applications where limited user control is desired.

The thermostats help to improve the control and delivery of conditioned air for heat pumps with or without 3rd stage auxiliary heat. As a result, the HVAC system maintains a more constant temperature and humidity, minimizing the time, energy, and cost to ramp up a system to maintain and deliver the desired temperature.
