January, 2010: 2009 SPS/IPC/Drives Show Report

Contemporary Controls exhibited at the SPS/IPC/Drives show in Nuernberg in late November. Surprisingly, attendance was equal to last year while the number of exhibitors decreased by about 11%. You could hardly tell the difference. Although the recession has taken its toll on exhibitors, visitors remained enthusiastic. The show had packed aisles with people seeking out the latest in technology. With 1237 exhibitors using 89,000 m² of floor space and 48,595 visitors from around the world, this is a "must" show for us.

This show continues to be the best industrial automation show for us worldwide. However, this year we tried something different. We included some of our building automation products including our BAS Remote operating as a Sedona Framework controller attached to our CTRLink Ethernet for Automation products. We had noticed in the past that some of our visitors were not only interested in industrial automation but building automation as well. Our instincts were correct with several visitors asking about BACnet/IP and our integration products to Modbus and BACnet MS/TP. Visitors included heat pump manufacturers, system integrators and control systems OEMs. While tradeshows remain an expensive method of communicating your message, they are unique in allowing us to interact with prospects regarding their product needs and the problems they face putting systems together. With both the building and industrial automation markets migrating their communication technology to Ethernet, our product offerings remain popular and we have every intention of returning to SPS/IPC/Drives next year.
